MT. BIKE OREGON 2008

July 18-20 and August 15-17     Oakridge, Oregon                info from the ORBike newsletter.

Oakridge, Oregon is home to some of the world's best trails for mt. biking. So many, in fact, that you'd have a hard time choosing which ones and planning how to get to the trailhead if it weren't for Mt. Bike Oregon, a mt. bikers dream weekend getaway. Take time off work, pack your gear and get ready for fun; they take care of the rest.

Mornings start with hearty breakfast and a chance get trail tips and advice from the expert guides, who will also accompany you on the trails. Shuttles take you up to the trailheads and you can spend the whole day riding one long trail or several shorter trails. Three meals a day are provided, trails cater to all skill levels and there is no shortage of non-biking activities for your non-riding guests, kids, friends and family who want to join you for this great weekend adventure. You can top all of that off with a free beer garden at night, making this one of the best mt. bike weekends in the country.

But don't just take our word for it. Garth Spencer from Specialized said, "Of all the MTB festivals that I have been to in the past year, MBO is by far the best I have seen!"

NEW HOOD PLAN RAISES CONCERNS

By RAELYNN RICARTE              info from the Hood River News.
News staff writer
May 6, 2008

Mountain bikers are concerned that the latest master plan for Mount Hood could cut 123 miles from popular trail systems.

Hood River County officials want to ensure that the proposed expansion of Wilderness does not impede their ability to harvest timber or fight fires. They also believe federal approval should be given to move Highway 35 out of the existing flood zone if necessary.

Mt. Hood Meadows Oregon LLC and the Hood River Valley Residents Committee are seeking reassurance that a land trade won’t be stalled. The two parties worry that, without definitive language and a set timeline, the deal to preserve resource lands in the southern sector of the county could fall through.

REACH THE BEACH

May 17th, 2008             info from the ORBike newsletter.

Reach the Beach is well known for its beautiful courses through rural Oregon. The quiet rural routes meander through Oregon wine country along the way to Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City where a Finish Line Beach Party, and your pint of Pelican Pub beer, awaits. That's right, a party directly on the beach, as in sink-your-toes-in-the-sand. The Pelican Pub features award-winning beers and in recent years they have expanded to include a broad deck overlooking the ocean. The Finish Line Beach Party takes over the outside of the pub so you can relax in the sand and celebrate your ride at the same time. You're going to love it.

Riders have a $50 fundraising goal to meet, and the American Lung Association of Oregon makes it easy to reach that goal. They have also added in some pretty sweet fundraising prizes for motivated fundraisers. Top fundraisers will get a pass to the sold-out Cycle Oregon "The Wild Wheeled West" ride in September. Riders can also qualify for an InFocus home entertainment projection system and many other impressive prizes. Not sure where to start? Their website offers easy tips for fundraisers and people who use the online fundraising tools can qualify for a Yakima rooftop Skybox. On top of all that, you can feel great knowing you're supporting clean Oregon air and healthy Oregon lungs.

FLUIDRIDE CUP RACE #2:  MOVED FROM MT. HOOD TO PORT ANGELES DUE TO SNOW

Hello fellow racers! After a bit of deliberation we have decided to move the second FR Cup race to Port Angeles where the first race was held. There is still about 4-7 feet of snow on the lower course at Mt Hood, and much more at the actual resort where we normally race there (Ski Bowl). So…bring your dh bike and your slalom rig, and get ready for another round of fun May 10th and 11th. We are currently trying to work out putting on a racing clinic the weekend prior to the race (May 3rd and 4th - waiting on approval from the land managers). Stay tuned for more on that. We broke the record for attendance for a regional nw gravity event last time; let’s do it again! Tell your freinds to come out and ride! Looking forward to seeing you all again soon.               info from www.fluidride.com

THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE NATIONAL SCENIC AREA HOLDS PUBLIC MEETING FOR THE COYOTE WALL (SYNCLINE) TRAIL PROJECT

HOOD RIVER, – The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, USDA Forest Service, will continue the public participation process for the Coyote Wall (Syncline) and Catherine Creek Trail Project by holding a public meeting on April 1, 2008, 6:00pm – 8:00pm. The meeting will be held at the
Pioneer Center in White Salmon, Washington.
During the last two months the Forest Service, numerous stakeholders and concerned citizens have worked together and used information gathered from the first two public meetings to develop a proposed trail system. The Agency wishes to solicit input on the proposal which will be analyzed through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process.
The area has become a very popular destination for recreation users, particularly mountain bikers
and hikers. Numerous user trails and routes have developed over the past several years. The trails are
located on a mix of public and private lands with some trails showing visible signs of erosion and
impacts to adjacent natural and cultural resources.

HANDMADE SHOW ATTRACTING BIG AND SMALL

info from the Bicycle Retailer

PORTLAND, ORE —What do Shimano, SRAM, Chris King, Zipp and Rolf Prima have in common? They will all have booths at this year's North American Handmade Bike Show.

Yes, the show is meant for those smaller frame builders to show of their wares, but the presence these larger manufacturers are bringing to this growing show is giving Handmade a brighterspotlight than ever before.

"We already have exhibitors from all over the country, and if past years are a guide, we'll have a lot of attendees from across America, too," said Don Walker, the show's director.

The cycling press has hopped on board as well, with Dirt Rag, Momentum Magazine, Mountain Flyer, Road Bike Action and VeloNews taking show booths to recruit new subscribers.

The 2008 show will be held in the Oregon Convention Center, Portland, February 8-10.
