THE EUGENE
ROUBAIX
April 18 -
Eugene, Oregon
info from the ORBike newsletter
Paris-Roubaix is a one-day professional bicycle road race in
northern France from Compiegne to Roubaix, near the Belgian
frontier. Famous for rough terrain and cobblestones, the event is
now a classic. More locally, the Eugene Roubaix is a now-famous 13
mile course featuring varied terrain and a straight stretch of
gravel road to test your mettle. The course has approximately 117
meters of rolling hills, one 'berg' (Oak Hill Road), and a gravel
section per lap. This course is tough but fun and the perfect
warm-up for the upcoming road race season.
This is an official OBRA event, just one of the very many races to
come for the season. You don't need to be an OBRA member to
participate, but you if you're not a member you will need to
purchase a one-day license to ride ($5). The entire course is
suitable for a standard road bike setup, but choose your tires
wisely and leave the super lightweight tires and climbing wheels for
another day. Support will be neutral, but wheels will not be
provided. The majority of racers bring a spare set of wheels for the
neutral wheel pit.
The Roubaix is continuing their hairy tradition: a prize goes to the
bearer of the best euro-style mullet. That's right, get ready to
chop your hair for business in the front, party in the back and vie
for this honored award.

HOSPITAL HILL, COWS, AND DOGS
Hi all. This is from
Ann McDonald: The cows are in at Hospital Hill 4/6/09. Please
don't park at the corral during this time period. Today 5 cars parked
there even with all the cattle rigs in sight. It really annoyed
the Kreps. We want to be able to ride while the cows are in the
pasture, so let all your friends know to not park there right now!
Also, they have posted no dogs during
this period. Thanks.
Let me repeat: NO DOGS ALLOWED ON HOSPITAL HILL until the cow moving is
done. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE respect this, or you will get
dogs and/or bikes banned from Kreps land.
Have fun riding. The trails are in fantastic shape!

HORNING'S HUSTLE XC MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE

This coming Sunday, the Oregon XC MTB Race Series is
coming close to town with the 3rd edition of the
Horning's
Hustle MTB Classic.
The weather forecast for this coming weekend is calling for dry, sunny
skies, so we hope to see you out in North Plains as a racer or as a
spectator.
Here are a couple of last-minute updates that I like to pass along:
1) Registration and check-in: Pre-registration has closed, but
you can still register on-site on Sunday between 8:00am and 10:00am. We
have only a limited number of registration volunteers, so please come
early to avoid getting caught up in a last-minute frenzy of 100+ racers
who all like to register in the last 15' before the start of the race.
To further speed up the registration flow, please bring a
completed
waiver
and a check for the correct amount (check our web site for race fees).
If you have pre-registered, you will still need to check in at the
registration table on Sunday to pick up your pull-tab, which you'll have
to pin to the back of your jersey.
2) Race Course: In the last few weeks, a bunch of dapper
volunteers have been working hard at Horning's Hideout, clearing trails,
cutting some new trail sections and figuring out some new twists on last
year's course. Check out the
GPS based
course map,
courtesy of volunteer Jim Jonke. The rainfall in the past weeks has been
significantly less than in previous years and there is no rain in the
forecast for this weekend, so we expect a course that will be much less
muddy and faster than last year. Still, there are a couple softer
sections, so mud tires are strongly recommended. Like last year, the
course will feature a rideable creek crossing, which will be a hoot.
3) Parking: Like in the past, Horning's Hideout will be charging
a $5 parking fee per car. Please make sure to bring $5 cash (exact
change please!), so they can keep the flow going.
4)
Pre-riding Saturday: if you want, you can pre-ride the course on
Saturday from 10am to 2pm. We will still be finishing up the final
course set-up, but the basic course will be all marked. Please note that
there is a $3 parking fee at Horning's Hideout, directly payable to Bob
Horning.
5) Food, Beer, Music and a Easter Egg Hunt, oh my! As always,
we'll make sure to take good care of our racers and spectators and make
it more than just a race. The good folks at
PUMP
will come out to sell hot food (chili anyone?), all for the good cause
of more and better MTB trails in our region. Racers over the age of 21
will also enjoy free post-race beer, courtesy of our local beer sponsor
Hopworks Urban
Brewing
(you'll even have the choice between a Crosstown Pale Ale and a Velvet
ESB!). To top it off we'll have a live performance of local rock & blues
band Paradox. And for the little ones, we've decided to turn the kiddie
race into a full-on offroad Easter Egg Hunt!
6) Awards and FREE Raffle: In good tradition, we will end the
event with awards for all categories and a free raffle for all racers
and volunteers. Besides medals for the top 3 finishers in each category,
we'll have some great raffle prizes, including:
- $250 pro cash purse, $300 worth of gift certificates, and a bunch of
nice bike components donated by our title sponsor
Cycle Path.
- Three svelte bottom brackets, a couple headsets and other cool bike
bling and t-shirts, courtesy of perennial local bike race sponsor
Chris King.
- Cowbells, yes more cowbell, provided by OBRA's favorite real estate
broker
Tom's Home
Team.
Thank you sponsors!
7) Race Plates: Don't forget to bring your 2009 OBRA MTB race
plates! If you haven't renewed your OBRA license yet, you will have
to do so on Sunday. Just make sure to schedule enough time before the
start of the race.
8) Volunteers: we are still in need of a couple more hands to
help out during the race and with clean-up. If you like to volunteer or
know someone who likes to help out, contact Tom Hoffman (thoffman@equitygroup.com
or 503-475-3417).
That's it. Keep your eyes peeled on our
facebook page
for any additional updates and random thoughts. And if you have any
questions, check our web site or just shoot me an e-mail. Hope to see
you on Sunday!

REACH THE BEACH
May 16 , 2009
info from the ORBike news letter
When spring arrives, all roads lead to the beach as 2,000 cyclists
gear up for Reach the Beach, the annual fundraising ride for the
American Lung Association in Oregon. There are four great routes to
choose from and with distances ranging from 26 to 100 miles, there's
a route for everyone. But if you're not yet in shape for the route
you'd really like to ride, don't worry. Once again the Portland
Wheelmen Touring Club continues their tradition of partnering with
the American Lung Association in Oregon to lead free training rides
nearly every weekend from now until May 16th.
The ride has a unique feature for your non-riding friends and
coworkers: an opportunity to just dream of reaching the beach in
Pacific City. The ALAO recognizes that while we all care about clean
Oregon air and healthy Oregon lungs, not everyone rides a bike.
That's why this year they have added Dream of the Beach, an option
for people to participate, raise funds, earn prizes and get a free
t-shirt without ever hopping on two wheels.
The early registration rate for Reach the Beach ends at midnight on
April 12th, so sign up today and save.

USA CYCLING 2009 GRAVITY MOUNTAIN BIKE TOUR
Colorado Springs, Colo. (Feb. 25, 2009)—USA Cycling
announced today the creation of a new professional gravity mountain
bike series designed to recognize the top gravity racers in
America. The USA Cycling Pro Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (ProGRT)
will consist of five events, including three UCI-sanctioned races,
throughout the United States. Together, these races will provide
world-class athletes with a consistent stage to showcase their
downhill and 4-Cross skills.
Beginning in May of 2009, the ProGRT will visit four states and
offer series ranking points to top finishers, resulting in overall
individual titles for men and women. In addition, competitors will
also have the opportunity to accumulate international ranking points
as three of the five races are inscripted on the UCI calendar.
The series opens with the downhill contest at
the Fluidride Cup in Port Angeles, Wash., May 1-3 and then heads
south to the Chile Challenge in New Mexico where both the downhill
and 4-Cross contests will be a part of the ProGRT. The tour then
picks back up on Aug. 8 with both the downhill and 4-Cross at the
Blast the Mass in Snowmass, Colo. The following weekend, the ProGRT
moves east to the Yankee Clipper at Windham Mountain, the only race
on both the
Pro Cross Country Tour (ProXCT)
and ProGRT. Wrapping up the tour will be the Whiteface 5K Downhill
in Wilmington, N.Y. on Aug. 29.
“The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park is honored to be part of the Pro
Gravity Tour. Five of the premier venues in the U.S. have been
chosen for this historical series that will surely last for
generations,” said Downhill Mike, promoter of the Whiteface 5K
Downhill. “It is only fitting to be the last race on the tour
with our eight-minute downhill track as racers should be in their
best condition of the season by late August. The Lake
Placid/Whiteface region has hosted two Winter Olympics (1932 & 1980)
and has attracted numerous top athletes of all kinds ever since. The
time has now come to bring a new breed of world class athletes to
Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid. Welcome Pro Gravity Tour.”
The objectives of the inaugural USA Cycling Pro GRT are to provide a
sequence of international-caliber events for elite gravity racers,
to recognize the best gravity athletes competing on U.S. soil, to
spotlight America’s top races that have made a commitment to host
high-level events and ultimately to raise the level of competitive
gravity racing in the U.S.
“With the development of the ProGRT we were looking to showcase the
country’s strongest gravity venues,” said USA Cycling Mountain Bike
Events and Program Director Kelli Lusk. “We want to bring the elite
