BMX WORLDS 2007 INFORMATION

For Immediate Release:
May 25, 2007
TRACK UNVEILING FIRST STEP TO BMX WORLDS

Victoria, BC –The official track for the 2007 UCI BMX World Championships received rave reviews from the Canadian National BMX team today. Six of Canada’s top BMX riders were the first to hit the track at today’s unveiling ceremony at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre.

“We’re excited to have the track open,” said David Richardson, President of the Victoria BMX 2007 World Championships Society. “Feedback on the track has been fantastic,” said Richardson. “It’s a great facility that will allow us to send a strong BMX contingent to the Olympics in 2008.”

Victoria will host the 2007 UCI BMX World Championship, the last world-class event before the BMX sport makes its debut at the 2008 Olympics. Over 2500 athletes from 40 nations will compete at the UCI BMX World Championships July 26-29, 2007. The development and unveiling of a world-class track in Victoria is a great opportunity for Victoria and the Canadian athletes. The event will showcase both Victoria and the sport of BMX and will potentially generate $16 million in direct and indirect economic activity.

According to Samantha Cools, five-time UCI BMX World champion, the new track is world class and will be a good learning tool for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. “It’s hard and challenging, but it’s going to be fun,” said Cools.

Riding the track today was a bit nerve racking, said Christine Miller. “It’s a hard track, but we need to step up and prove that we’re World’s material.” Miller, 19, is confident about the upcoming World Championships because the Canadian team has a home track advantage. “It’s pretty cool. This is ourtrack for training for the Worlds.”

Tanya Dubnicoff, Canada’s national BMX coach, said riding the track today gave the team a huge advantage. “There’s not enough money in the world that could give the team this kind of advantage,” she said. Pre-riding the track mentally prepares the team and allows them to get their bearings. The team will take advantage of the track by training on it every other week.

Overall the team was impressed with the layout and quality of the track. It’s smooth, fairly large and has nice short jumps. Although construction of the track began in October and recommenced two months ago after a wet winter delay, the design has been in the works for almost two years, said Daryll Michell, the track’s contractor and a previous BMX World participant. The track consists of 5000 yards of material and 200 tons of asphalt.

INTERESTING ARTICLE ON PROVIDENCE HOSPITALS AND BIKES

Space: Cyclists' Final Frontier   by Nicholas Deshaisn  www.wweek dot com

Providence employees say hospital gives no love to bike commuters.

For a hospital that sponsors one of the nation's largest bicycling events, Providence Portland Medical Center doesn't share that support for cycling with its own employees.

The Northeast Portland hospital lacks sufficient parking spaces for bikes, a situation that's especially galling to cyclists who note that Providence is an institution ostensibly concerned about public health.

"It's a hospital," says Jerod Potter, a clerical employee in Providence's oncology department. "A healthy lifestyle should be promoted. Instead they promote driving to work and smoking."

"On weekdays, especially on sunny days, the bike parking is full," Potter says, adding that doubling the number of available spaces would adequately provide what's needed.

If Potter hops in his car, more than 2,000 parking spots await him at work. But since he's a bike commuter, he must find room   .........for the rest of the story click here. (File under Oregon Bicycle Culture)

LANDIS SEEKS BOTH VINDICATION AND CHANGE

Almost 10 months after he won the Tour de France, American cyclist Floyd Landis will defend himself against charges that he doped at the world's biggest bike race.

Landis will face a three-person arbitration panel Monday in Malibu, Calif., but the mild-mannered former Mennonite's strategy will be to turn the tables and put the U.S.Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and the anti-doping establishment on trial.

"There is more importance to these proceedings than a chance to begin to right a wrong being done to me," Landis says. "They represent an important test to see if the anti-doping system can begin to change for the good of sport and the sake of justice and fairness."

Under USADA rules and the World Anti-Doping Code, anti-doping agencies are not allowed to comment on ........for the rest of the story click here                                   (file under Oregon Bicycle Culture)

VELODROME BILL STALLS IN SALEM

Senate Bill 926, which seeks to use $3.5 million in state lottery funds to build three new velodromes in Oregon, is stalled on the desk of the Ways and Means Committee.

The bill is awaiting referral to a subcommittee, but so far Ways and Means Committee Co-Chair Mary Nolan (D-Portland) has not passed the bill along. The reason? She has not heard from enough supporters of the bill, and has some reservations about  using state lottery funds to pay for velodromes..

STRENGTH TRAINING

I have been hitting the gym to try to lean down and gain some strength.  So I thought I would post this article about core muscle training.  It is useful information no matter what discipline of cycling you are in.

CORE

Here's how to train the most important muscles for cycling.

By Dimity McDowell  www.bicycling.com

Your bulging quads and razor-cut calves are the envy of your pack, and you start every ride strong. As the ride progresses, though, your hips seesaw in the saddle, your lower back aches, and you slow in corners. The problem? Your core cries uncle long before your legs wear out. Although a cyclist's legs provide the most tangible source of power, the abs and lower back are the vital foundation from which all movement, including the pedal stroke, stems. "You can have all the leg strength in the world, but without a stable core you won't be able to ........for the rest of the story click here.

Reach the Beach, well known for its beautiful routes through rural Oregon, continues to add new, exciting features every year. This year they've added a 110 mile Corvallis Challenge. This distance route will take you along winding roads through a gorgeous region of Oregon. The quiet rural route will meander through Oregon wine country along the way to Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City where a Finish Line Beach Party, and your pint of Pelican Pub beer, awaits. That's right, a party directly on the beach, as in sink-your-toes-in-the-sand. You're going to love it.

Reach the Beach is the major fundraiser for the American Lung Association of Oregon. Every pedal stroke helps promote clean Oregon air and lung health. There's an easy-to-achieve $50 fundraising minimum and if you're a motivated fundraiser you may qualify for amazing prizes - including a pass to the sold out Cycle Oregon, a Trek bike, REI panniers - and the great feeling of knowing you're supporting the Lung Association.

WHISTLER BIKE PARK OPENS MAY 19th

The skiing is still sooo good, in fact I had one the best days doing high speed cruisers (next best thing when there isn't any fresh pow) last Thursday. But the sun is stronger, I got a sunburn on my face and (the bigwigs will hang me for saying this), you won't believe how happy I am to see the brown spots on the lower part of the mountain. You can even smell the moist earth melting out, coming out of hibernation. Speaking of which, bears have been sighted in the valley. Spring is definitely here. I'm so excited, I even went for an  X-C ride in Pemby last weekend.

Now, before you get too exited and start bouncing up and down on your bike, there is still a lot of snow at the top of Fitz chair. We have set the opening date for May 19 and I know that we will have a lot of work to do before then. The rusty cogs in our heads are starting to turn as we are beginning to plan out the year. One part of me is stoked and the other part is cold with fear.        for the rest of the story click here.

MOUNT HOOD BILL NEEDS A NUDGE

On May 3, the U.S. Senate will hear the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Act of 2007, which will protect many important places to Oregon cyclists. Senator Ron Wyden (D) and Senator Gordon Smith (R) recently introduced S 647. The bill bodes well for both land protection and mountain bicycling and maintains boundary adjustments that will accommodate access to important trails.

Read more about the Mount Hood Wilderness Act online.

Please call you state senators and let them know you support this bill ... but that with important addition it will get even better. Consider using these talking points:

  • You are a Oregon resident (give town name) and you support the Mount Hood Wilderness Act.
  • You support strong land protections and value opportunities for sustainble recreation like mountain biking.
  • The bill needs one important change: Bonny Butte Trail (Trail #471) should be protected with Wild and Scenic River status, not managed as Wilderness which bans bikes.

Please call your state senators' offices today!

Sen. Wyden 202-224-5244

Sen. Smith 202-224-3753

SUSTAINABLE WHEELS

article from www.wweek.com

Mitch Shults bikes to Hillsboro and back every day, packing heat.

Mitch Shults pedals to work on a bicycle that costs much as a Harley but couldn't keep pace with a Vespa. Still, the 45-year-old Intel consultant happily trudges back and forth an hour and 10 minutes each way between his Southeast Portland home and his Hillsboro office every day on what's probably the most expensive bicycle in Portland.

Shults sports a brand new Velomobile, which is not a brand at all but a type of enclosed recumbent bicycle more common to Northern Europe. Low to the ground and aerodynamic, the sleek, canary-yellow pod resembles the cockpit of a Formula One racer. His is German-made with an aftermarket electric motor that facilitates speeds of up to 35 mph on flat ground while the rider    ...........for the rest of the story click here.

RIVER CITY WINS SPECIALIZED 2007 GREENIE AWARD
info from
bicycle retailer

APRIL 26, 2007 -- PORTLAND, OR  --River City Bicycles has won the first Specialized 2007 Greenie Award, thanks to an eco-conscious campaign to promote bicycling as a solution to climate change. Specialized launched the Greenie Awards as a way to acknowledge its retailers' green-minded efforts and to motivate the public to reduce its global footprint.

River City’s win was announced on Earth Day, and the award will be presented at the Specialized Worldwide Dealer event in Salt Lake City this July.

“We applaud our retailers’ efforts and River City for promoting riding a bike as a solution to offset climate change,” said Mike Sinyard of Specialized. “Our own Commute Club offset over 18 tons of CO2 in 2006, so we all recognize just how much every ride counts.”

Dave Guettler, owner of River City Bicycles, has worked in the bicycle industry for nearly 30 years. Starting as a mechanic at a Schwinn shop in Chico, California, he worked his way up to management and later co-owned a chain of seven bike shops in the San Francisco area before deciding to focus solely on River City Bicycles. Today, his Portland store boasts 15,000 square feet and 55 employees in the peak season.

“At River City, we feel strongly compelled to promote bicycle commuting, since it benefits us personally and our society as a whole. To that end, we not only offer products and services tailored to the bike commuter, but focus 80 percent of our advertising budget on ‘commute by bike’ messaging,” Guettler said.

Posted by The Oregonian April 12, 2007

Looking for something to do on this upcoming wet weekend? You can always scope out an only-in-Portland film festival dedicated to the humble bicycle. Short films about bikes and the people who ride them will be showcased in the fifth annual "Filmed by Bike" festival taking place this weekend at the Clinton Street Theater.

The show usually sells out, so consider yourself warned.

Want a sneak peak at one of the films? Here's a trailer for Joshua Frankel's short film on bicycle messengers on the streets of Midtown Manhattan:

They are on a road trip that is detailed here.  Pink Bike Road trip part one, part two, part three, part four, & part five. The weather in the Hood was perfect for riding today.  Another month or two and the rest of the trails will be open.   If you are one of those fair weathered bikers start dusting off the bike now.  See you on the trail.

Grind your way up with your friends and leave them standing still as you attack the single track. The tricky decent they were famous for in 2001 and 2002 is back on course for this year.

Warm food and bread await you after you finish. Awards go three deep and the organizers are touting a HUGE raffle for this year. Get your cross country season started off right with a mudslinging bang.               for more info

"It is a luxury to have such an excellent quality course that's completely closed to car traffic and so close to town for riders to enjoy racing in Portland's long summer evenings," says Jim Anderson, series organizer. Avoid traffic and reduce pollution by getting to PIR by bike, carpool or MAX.
