COVERED BMX TRACK IN THE FUTURE

You think this would have been on the home page of  molallariverbmx.com 's  web site  instead of buried, or on Oregonbmx.com.   Oh well here it is.

In case you missed it, an announcement was made on Sunday regarding "something big" in the works...this could be the end of MUD races at Molalla River BMX and allow us to be a true, year-round track!
At a City Council meeting Wednesday night, we were given the unanimous thumbs up to proceed with "Operation: BMX under the Big Top"
This week, we will have an on-site walk through with the Public Works Director, and then......

This is good news so I hope everything goes as planned.

RIDING THE EDGE OF FALLS CITY

A forest in Polk County is a center of gravity for freeriding mountain bikers

Friday, January 26, 2007

FALLS CITY -- Log trucks loaded with fir trees still roll past the Boondocks Tavern on Main Street in this bucolic corner of Polk County, but inside, bright biking jerseys mix it up with the plaid shirts.
Most Oregonians probably haven't heard of the Black Rock Mountain Biking Area, but the trail system -- 1,000 acres of awesome amid the clear-cut Coast Range foothills west of Dallas -- is getting noticed by the growing and gravity-averse freeride mountain biking community.
"I've personally talked to a fellow from New York, someone from Virginia and a guy from North Carolina," said Troy Munsell, owner of Salem's Santiam Bicycles, which sponsors a local trail-building group. "And we've had a guy from Ireland come twice."

Freeriding is to traditional mountain biking what demolition derby is to bumper cars. Riders generally wear plastic body armor and full-face helmets as they tear over rough terrain ....... for the rest of the story click here.

ROOTING OUT NEW ROUTES

By Peter LaPorte

Finding new routes is frequently a challenge, especially if you're a newcomer to the area or if you're off to another city (or country) and want to ride.

In the past, I've mentioned
Blueberry Rides here in Portland - perhaps the single best web site for routes and cue sheets for rides in Stump Town, the 'couve and places south. If you're a member of Portland Velo, you'll know that their database of rides continues to grow.

Surfing the cycling 'net the other day, I came across yet another site and one that appears to hold a great deal promise.   ........ for the rest of the story from Oregon Live click here.

THIS JUST IN FROM THE OREGON BIKE NEWSLETTER

I have done this ride for the past two years, and it is probably one of the most fun charity rides in Stumptown.

WORST DAY OF THE YEAR RIDE | February 11 - Portland

If it's cold, windy and raining and you're with 1,500 other cyclists, you must be on the Worst Day of the Year Ride. The threat of terrible weather has never deterred hundreds of riders from coming out in support of the Community Cycling Center, this fun ride's beneficiary. Proceeds from the will help support their bicycle programs for low-income youth. This event will sell out, so register early to guarantee your slot on the 18- or 40-mile course. There are plenty of treats and hot drinks along the way, and a delicious veggie chili, chicken noodle soup and cornbread finish line feast.

The organizers have added in all sorts of upgrades, including packet pickup the day before, shorter lines, more signs and volunteers to guide you on your way and a top-notch costume contest, complete with great prizes from Showers Pass, Tire Fly and others. Come dressed in your crazy finest, even if that means putting a wig OVER your helmet!

BODIES THE EXHIBITION

September 30, 2006 to April 1, 2007  Seattle, Washington

I know this is not exactly bike related, but it is to interesting to pass up.  I learned about this exhibit when I was visiting Watson Chiropractic the other day.  To be a better athlete it is good to understand the human body , so it fits into cycling in that regard.

Here is a quick summary of the exhibit.

To help you see what a body really looks like on the inside, this Exhibition uses real human bodies that have been preserved so they do not decay.  A human specimen is first preserved according to standard mortuary science. The specimen is then dissected to show whatever it is that someone wants to display. Once dissected, the specimen is immersed in acetone, which eliminates all body water. The specimen is then placed in a large bath of silicone, or polymer, and sealed in a vacuum chamber. Under vacuum, acetone leaves the body in the form of gas and the polymer replaces it, entering each cell and body tissue. A catalyst is then applied to the specimen, hardening it and completing the process. This method of preservation creates a specimen that will not decay. This offers thousands of unique teaching possibilities for educators at all levels, including
medical professionals, archeologistsand other scientists.

OREGON EARNS 'A' MARK ON 2006 IMBA REPORT CARD

The 2006 IMBA Report Card hails Oregon and Scotland, while handing demerits to British Columbia and Montana. The Report Card, now in its eighth edition, gauges the riding opportunities and advocacy strength in the United States, Canadian Provinces and nations with significant IMBA activities.

In 2006, IMBA has stepped away from assigning each state, province and nation individual grades. Instead, we're hoping to focus attention where it's most needed: the top of the class, and the problem students who will need extra attention to succeed in 2007.

Category: Top Dog in USA
State: Oregon
Grade: A

We've always said that there's more to the Top Dog award than offering world-class trails - entries like the North Umpqua and the Mackenzie River trail mean that Oregon stacks up with any place you could visit in that regard. Our reasons for making this selection go beyond outstanding riding.               for more of the store from IMBA click here.

CYCLISTS SEEK ALL-WEATHER VELODROME

The aging outdoor Alpenrose Velodrome is crumbling, and some say it won't last long
Monday, December 11, 2006
BOAZ HERZOG

Three members of the burgeoning Portland bicycle racing scene have launched an effort to build an indoor track racing facility.

They plan to gather $1,000 pledges from 100 people, then solicit the city, businesses and others for support to replace the aging Alpenrose Velodrome in Southwest Portland.

The 39-year-old outdoor facility at Alpenrose Dairy, which requires patches of paint and cement multiple times a year, literally is crumbling  ........ for more from the Oregonian Newspaper click here.

THE SNOW IS COMING

It is time to cross train.  The ski season is almost here.  So I put up a link to to the ski resorts.

I got this in my E-mail the other day.

Top 5 Reasons To Be Thankful You're a Snowboarder

With Thanksgiving just days away here in America, we thought it was appropriate to reflect on the things we are thankful for. And we realized as riders, we have a lot going for us. Check it out ::

5. It's way cooler than cross-country skiing - No spandex.
4. No purple toenails - Snowboard boots are way comfier than ski boots and don't result in lost toenails in the spring.
3. Cameron Diaz is a snowboarder.  (she's hot enough said)
2. Less gear means you can hold your snowboard in one hand and a beer in the other.
1. We get to wear saggy, baggy pants, so no matter how much turkey we eat on Thanksgiving, no one will ever know

IS AN INDOOR VELODROME IN PORTLAND'S FUTURE?

BLAZERS BEWARE, BIKERS AIM BIG

Here's all you really need to know about bicycle racing at the Portland velodrome. The 268-meter track is raked at a 43-degree angle. And the bikes have no brakes.

Need a mental image? Think Elvis in "Roustabout." Riding that way cool Wall of Death.

The Alpenrose Velodrome -- developed in 1962 on the campus of the Alpenrose Dairy on Southwest Shattuck Road -- is so steeply raked that at any speed slower than 12 mph cyclists are overcome by a strange and mysterious force.      ........... for the rest of the story from the Oregonian newspaper click here.

Sea Otter Classic will shuck its hard-earned reputation as a "cycling festival" in 2007. BMX at last gets its chance at the limelight with the eagerly anticipated return of BMX racing to Sea Otter. In preparation for its first-ever appearance as an Olympic sport in 2008,  ......... for the rest of the story from MTBR.com  click here.

OREGON LEGISLATION BODES WELL FOR CYCLIST

Senator Ron Wyden (D) and Senator Gordon Smith (R) recently introduced the Senate version of the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Act. The bill bodes well for mountain bicycling and maintains many boundary adjustments that will accommodate access to important trails.

The Oregon Mountain Bike Alliance (ORMBA) and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) have worked diligently on the bill for almost three years and believe the Senate version is good for land protection and continued mountain bike access. ORMBA and IMBA strongly support protecting the lands around Mount Hood and are asking for a few important changes to the bill.
