KRUGER'S CROSSING
CYCLOCROSS RACE
Like last year, this will NOT be your usual cross race! Besides the
challenges thrown at us by the November weather gods, you can expect a wild
course that will lead you along rutted farm roads, through berry fields,
pastures, a barn, and a full-scale corn maze!
We'll have beer, wine, hot cider and gourmet food at hand, catered by
Kruger's Farm Market, Salvador Molly's and Laurelwood. And the farm venue is
way to much fun for leaving the family and kids at home.

HELP
REVITALIZE PARK FUNDING AND TRAIL OPPORTUNITIES
Mountain bikers have an
opportunity to voice their support for a dramatic increase in National Park
Service (NPS) funding. A proposed bill would appropriate the largest ever
funding increase for the NPS--at least $100 million annually--and
dramatically improve visitor experiences, including those on singletrack.
This bill, H.R. 3094, will
provide funding for a series of signature projects around the country,
including those for new trails. A plan for new singletrack in Big Bend
National Park is one of 200 proposed projects selected from more than 6,000
applications. Supporting H.R. 3094 will improve chances for similar
projects.
Take Action
Voice your support.
It takes just a few seconds with IMBA's simple online form.
Tell your friends. Ask all of
your riding partners to take action.
Additional Information
H.R. 3094 is a crucial
component of the
Centennial Initiative,
a 10-year plan to enhance the NPS for its 100th birthday in 2016. IMBA and
the
Outdoor Alliance
strongly support this bill and associated programs that will restore the
luster of our National Parks System and set the direction for the next
century of park management.
Mountain bicycling is an ideal
tool for reacquainting a new generation of Americans to their
national
parks. This human-powered, quiet, low-impact activity helps get more people
out of their cars and exploring parks on narrow dirt trails. By expanding
this use in appropriate areas, the NPS will help visitors form lasting bonds
with our most valuable natural landscapes. As a family-friendly activity,
mountain bicycling also provides a fun, exciting, appropriate way for
visitors to engage in healthy exercise in National Parks.
IMBA and the NPS signed a
formal partnership
agreement
in 2005. IMBA will continue to provide information on the Centennial
Initiative and our partnership with the NPS on
IMBA.com.

KLUNKERZ DVD
Check out the DVD
Klunkerz.
Long before the
mountain bike entered our global consciousness, the cycling enthusiasts of
Northern California’s Marin County rode modified pre WWII bicycles down the
slopes of MountTamalpais. They developed their bikes through rigorous field-
testing, often risking life and limb to do so. Some of these cyclists were
Category 1 road racers looking for a new way to train during the off-season.
Others were simply fun-loving hippies looking for a new way to commune with
nature. Their early bikes werescavenged from dumpsters and junkyards. It was
from these humble beginnings that a multi billion dollar industry, a form of
recreation for the masses, and an Olympic event, were born. These hefty
steeds were affectionately known as Klunkerz.
I just
picked up my copy a few days ago. It is a documentary style video. It is

KRUEGER'S CROSSING
NOVEMBER 25th Sauvie
Island info from the ORBike Newsletter
Portland Racing brings you the
second edition of the Kruger's Crossing Cyclocross Classic - so awesome
last year they had to bring it back. This epic race is held at Kruger's
Farm, located in the beautiful countryside of Sauvie Island and only 20
minutes from downtown Portland.
In addition to the challenges November weather gods will throw at
racers, you can expect a wild course that leads you along rutted farm
roads, through berry fields, pastures, a barn, a beer garden and of
course the much-heralded corn maze. And don't worry about getting cold -
the organizers are staging a bonfire along the course to keep people
toasty. Indeed, not your standard cross race.
The party that surrounds the racing features beer, hot wine, hot cider
and gourmet food catered by Kruger's Farm Market and Salvador Molly's.
Family racers and aspiring kids can participate in the free kiddy race.
This is inspirational. A must watch. Shows
what can happen when you have the will to live and good family and friends
by your side. It is about Stephen Murray a pro dirt jumper who broke his
back at the Dew tour.

ABA GREAT NORTHWEST
BMX NATIONAL 2008 UPDATE
I was in Redmond Oregon
on Wednesday. They are already talking about the national Bmx race on
the radio. Promotion four and on half months early for a Bmx race is
good. I wonder if anyone will come out and watch who isn't part of the
sport? The facility from the outside looks nice. I could not get
a look at the inside. Access from the highway is super easy. One left
turn and two blocks and you are there. Hopefully this will turn into a
good venue for the northwest national and Oregon racing scene.

PLEASE HELP US KEEP BIKE
ACCESS OPEN ON SYNCLINE!"
This letter was sent to the bike community at large. "Once again hunting
season is upon us. Muzzleloader season opens Sept. 1 and runs through the
30th. Modern Firearm opens Oct 13 and runs through the 31st. Late Buck opens
Nov 15 and runs through the 18th." "Once again we ask that you get this
information out to your people and ask them to refrain from using this area
during hunting season for their safety and our piece of mind. We allow the
use of our property, the rest of the year and wish to be left alone to enjoy
our little piece of heaven for this short period of time." "We would
appreciate one more thing. DOGS are becoming a huge problem. Bikers
allow them to run loose and we are seeing more and more deer being chased.
Not only is this illegal, it is needless harassment of wildlife. WE ARE DOG
OWNERS. WE LOVE DOGS. Please don't make us take measures we don't want to
take. Either keep your animals on a leash or leave them at home, we do. Keep
in mind that hunting season is not just in our area and advise your members
to wear hunter blaze orange when in the field during this period. Thank you!

LANDIS MUST FORFEIT
TOUR TITLE
PARIS - Floyd Landis lost his expensive and
explosive doping case Thursday when the arbitrators upheld the results of a
test that showed the 2006 Tour de France champion used synthetic
testosterone to fuel his spectacular comeback victory, The Associated Press
has learned.
The decision, handed down nearly four months after
a bizarre and bitterly fought hearing, leaves Landis with only one more

GREAT NORTHWEST BMX
NATIONAL IN OREGON
The word at the moment is the
Great Northwest BMX
National is going to be in Redmond Oregon this year. All they have to
do is sign the contract on the dotted line. We will wait and see.
Portland's personality as a biking city evolves from
recreation and fitness toward transportation for the
average Joe and Jane
Emily
Gardner, a car-driving native of Detroit, Mich., grew up
a self-proclaimed couch potato. She spent time snacking
and watching MTV. She didn't ride a bike, much less
commute on one.
Then, in
2004, she moved to Portland.
"I had
heard about biking in Portland," Gardner says. "I saw
everybody doing that. It didn't really catch on with me
at first."

BLACK ROCK FEATURED ON
KATU CHANNEL 2 NEWS
POLK COUNTY - Mountain
bikers come from all over to ride a little piece of heaven called “Black
Rock” in rural Polk County.
Rick Bontrager, the
President of the Black Rock Mountain Bike Association, told KATU: “It’s like
acting like a kid again and having a little bit of that thrill and then
building your confidence and weighing the thrill versus risk factor.”
Each rider who visits
the 1,000 acre forested site near Fall City has his/her own reasons, but
newcomer Mary Deconcini told KATU that there is one thing is everyone’s
mind: “Basically, 'Hey, I can ........ for the rest of the story

SWITCHING GEARS
The Dirt of Mountain Biking in Portland
We don’t have to tell
you that Portland is bike-friendly. We don’t have to make crazy the
analogies or spout statistics, because you already know. But how much do you
know about our mountain biking scene? When have you seen, amid the swarms of
cruisers with bells, commuters with crates and banana-seated choppers, an
aluminum beauty with rugged tires and front suspension fork? Not on our
streets, that’s for sure.
That won’t change (simply because, thankfully, Portland streets are paved).
But soon frustrated P-Town off-roaders will see more development in existing
parks and elsewhere, with talk of building urban bike courses

Around Portland
info from the ORBike.com newsletter.
Whether you're on the
sidelines or on the course, you're going to get muddy at cyclocross -
and that's part of the beauty of it. A great culture has developed
around this blossoming autumnal sport that makes it equally entertaining
for both spectators and racers, no matter the weather. In fact, we've
got the nation's largest cyclocross races, with huge attendance and
participation. Oregonians: we're not afraid of a little wet.
So slip on your boots (for plodding through the mud) and grab your
cowbell (for ringing) and head on out to the Alpenrose Dairy on Sunday,
October 7 for the first race of the River City Bicycles Cross Crusade
Series. The Beginners and Masters 50+ categories start at 9 am and the
last race of the day is at 2 pm.
Other cyclocross races are popping up around the state. Stay tuned into
our blog for all the season's info.
