MAX WANTS EASY RIDE FOR BIKERS

More cyclists are using light rail, and the crowds have caused clashes

PATRICK O'NEILL
The Oregonian Staff

MAX is becoming a victim of its own success.

Ridership on the light-rail system is rising as gas prices remain high, getting more cars off the road. A growing number of those passengers are bicyclists who use the trains, reducing congestion at both ends of their commute.

But when bikers and nonbikers wind up on the same crowded train at rush hour, tempers sometimes flare. TriMet officials are looking for ways to reduce that friction, short of restricting the number of bikes on trains during rush hour.  ......for more info click here.

BICYCLIST APPARENTLY HIT INTENTIONALLY, POLICE SAY DRIVER IS CHARGED

Portland police say a 47-year-old driver appears to have intentionally used his car to bowl over two bicyclists who were riding along Southeast Clinton Street Friday afternoon.
The male cyclists -- Ben Ramsdell, 25, and Timothy Mastne, 41 -- were brought by ambulance from the 1000 block of Southeast Clinton Street to Oregon Health & Science University with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz said he didn't know what injuries they suffered.
Schmautz said the driver, Johnny Jerry Eschweiler, has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree assault and was being booked into jail Friday evening.
"Apparently the bicyclists were hit by the car and knocked off," Schmautz said. "...He (Eschweiler) dragged the bikes about 100 feet before he came to a stop."
Southeast precinct officers responded to the scene at 12:41 p.m. Schmautz said it appears the three were arguing, but he wasn't sure if the dispute started before or after Eschweiler struck the cyclists.
Multnomah County court records show Eschweiler has two traffic tickets -- for failing to obey a traffic control device in 2000 and speeding in 2005. He paid fines and fees of $135 and $141 respectively.

CBS SUCKS

I went to watch the Jeep K.O.M. series on CBS.  They preempted it with football.  Doesn't football get enough coverage in this country.  When will Americans open their eyes to other sports besides baseball, basketball, & football.   The ratings for the X-Games and Dew Action Sports Tour, as well as how many people sign up to play soccer (the real football) would show that people want more.  Oh well maybe I shouldn't watch sports and should go outside and ride my bike.  Since they won't put it on I guess we are stuck with the web.

GIVE US OUR PEDALS WORTH

People upset by missteps in the Providence Bridge Pedal deserve dollars back, and transparency
Article from the August 15th edition of the Oregonian

T he Providence Bridge Pedal is one of those community marvels that remind Portlanders why they live here. Atop a bike, atop a bridge, particularly on a beautiful day, you feel as if you own the world.

Or, to be more precise, as if you're renting it for a few hours. You do have to share the bridges with thousands of other walkers and bicyclists -- 20,000 in all this year -- and you do have to pay a fee. (It varies, but it's $25 to preregister.) Still, the sensation can be so transporting that the price doesn't seem exorbitant if the Pedal runs well.

It didn't this year. Perhaps as many as 1,500 riders went away disappointed and unable to complete the ride. As The Oregonian's Helen Jung reported Tuesday, bottlenecks forced bicyclists to walk parts of the course. Some participants had to put up with ridiculously long waits, and others just gave up and went home.

KRUGER'S KERMESSE FARM CRITERIUM

With cyclocross season just over a month away, I like to give you a quick update about another exciting, new race brought to you by Portland Racing: the inaugural Kruger's Kermesse Farm Crit.
This fun, cyclocross-style criterium will take place on Saturday September 15 on the farm roads of Kruger's Farm in the beautiful countryside of Sauvie Island, just 20' outside Portland.

Obviously, this will NOT be your usual downtown crit. Except for racers doing mulitple laps across a relatively compact course, everything will be different! The race - open for racers of all ages and all abilities - will probably feel more like a fast and non-technical cyclocross race over hard-packed farm roads, featuring some potholes, some ruts, a sprinkle of gravel, a bit of sand, and depending on the weather, possibly some mud. However, everything will be 100% rideable (no barriers or dismounts). Just think about it as Portland's mini-version of Paris-Roubaix, sans cobblestones. To get a better idea of what we're talking about, check out the
course map and some photos.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, racers and spectators will be able to kick back on the concert lawn, located behind the farm store and right next to the finish line. We'll have a beer garden and gourmet food at hand, catered by
Kruger's Farm Market and Salvador Molly's. And we will end the day with a team relay race, a raffle and a live concert, Kruger's Farm style!

So mark your calendars and start looking forward to another great day of bike race fun at the farm.

PROVIDENCE BRIDGE PEDAL

August 12 - Portland        info from the Oregon Bike.com newsletter.

On the morning of Sunday, August 12, Portland area friends, families and neighbors will hop on their bicycles, and by noon they will have biked a combined 1/2 million miles. That is like biking to the moon and back, but Providence Bridge Pedal is much more fun.

In 1994 a group of bicycle enthusiasts, inspired by the success of rides like Cycle Oregon and Seattle to Portland, had the idea that there should be a biking event to celebrate Portland. It was a short step from that notion to resounding agreement that Portland's Willamette River bridges would serve as the centerpiece of the ride. These ten bridges include architectural masterpieces (and a couple of clunkers) and offer remarkable views of the city and the river. But the bridges are more than a visual landscape: they actually stitch the community together.

Over 7,500 people showed up for the first Bridge Pedal in 1996. This year almost three times that number are expected to participate. Sign up today for the rare opportunity to see the city from way up top the Fremont bridge, to ride with friends and enjoy a day in the city.               for more info click here.

CRANKWORX BREAKS RIDER RECORD

WHISTLER, British Columbia —This year's Crankworx seems to be one that will be remembered for quite a while.

"This Kokanee Crankworx was the most successful yet," said Jeremy Roche, general manager of Kokanee Crankworx. "With excellent musical acts from all over the region, incredibly talented athletes from across the globe and exciting events, the festival has grown from a grassroots gathering to a world-class event in only a few short years."

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park hit all-time records, with the most ever riders in one day (2,197), three consecutive days of 2,000-plus riders and most riders in the bike park in one week (12,383). A total of 14,495 riders hit the bike park during the festival, which ran from July 21 to July 29.

CRANKWORX & BMX WORLDS

This weekend the tribe splits up to check out the BMXWorlds & Crankworx.  I may be broken, but not out.  I will be going to Crankworx and do a little spectating from the sidelines at the longhorn.  We hopeful will hook up with the cool dudes from www.Ride-this.com .  Oh well, better to recover at a nice resort town than my overly hot house.  There is always next year to ride a bike.  Tyler should be having  some new opinions come Monday or so also.  So until Monday I am out of here.  Peace out and remember life is beautiful.

BROKEN

Crankworx starts this week, and I am broken.  I was road riding and got hit by a car at around 25 to 30 miles an hour.  Ever have your life flash before your eyes this is a good way to do it.  Luckily I am not that hurt.  Just a puncture wound, 4 inch laceration, multiple bruise down my back and shoulders, and a fractured knee.  I have learned from this that you have to look at life on the positive tip.  I could have been dead or broke my neck or back.  The only problem is I don't now what condition my beautiful bike is in.  LOL.  She never tried to hurt anyone.  Ten to Twelve weeks of recovery is just around the corner.  I guess my cycling season is officially over.  I should be back to form about a month before snowboard season.  I think I am still going to Crankworx.  The longhorn is right at the base of the lifts.  I can still watch the competition and drink beer.  I need a vacation anyway.   I would also like to thank all of the people who have called or stopped by to wish me well.  The Tribe lives on.  The bonds that cycling has helped start with my friends means the world to me.

I just bought the new film by Clay Porter.  Between the Tape. I would recommend it to add to your MTB video library. It is a little more documentary style then the other two videos he did Hypnosis & Synopsis. Here is the description of the DVD from their web site.

Between the Tape documents the 2006 World Cup Series of downhill mountain bike racing with an intense and personal look at both the sport, as a whole, as well as its top athletes.

Following several story lines through the film, Between the Tape documents the competition, travel, as well as the riders away from the racecourse.

TIME TO TAKE ACTION !!!

Posted by Peter LaPorte June 13, 2007 17:18PM  on:
http://blog.oregonlive.com/rubbersidedown/

Last Saturday, another cyclist was killed on Oregon's roads. He was a member of Portland Velo out for a group ride. No different from you or me.

What follows is Portland Velo's member email on the accident.

IT IS TIME TO ACT!

On Saturday, 6/9/07, Portland Velo member Tim O'Donnell was struck and killed by a motorist while riding with the A17 group on our Saturday Signature Series ride. Portland Velo members Martin Obando, Michael Forester, Leslie Louis and Alan Jeddeloh were riding with Tim. A celebration of Tim's life will be held on Friday, June 15 at 3:00pm at St. Patrick's Church, 1623 NW 19th Street. Please come and support the family and your fellow club members who were with Tim. Please send your cards and condolences to Mary O'Donnell and Family, 17725 SW Sugar Plum Lane, Aloha, OR 97007.

Tim's tragedy has struck us to the core; we have lost a friend and fellow cyclist. Tim was already an avid cyclist when he joined Portland Velo, but he really took to the sport last year when he joined our first (and only) development squad ride. John Ohnstad introduced Tim to the club, as Tim was a regular at John's spin class. Tim went from barely being able to keep a 12 MPH pace for 10 miles to riding regularly with the A19's. Along the way many of us got to know him as a super-friendly guy with a hearty laugh who  .........for the rest of the story

OLYMPIC BMX TRACK OPENS IN UTAH

JUNE 14, 2007 -- SALT LAKE CITY, UT --A replica of the 2008 Olympic BMX track opened in Salt Lake City, Utah. The track will allow riders to train for the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games in China, where BMX will debut as an Olympic sport. The new track is expected to draw hopefuls from around the country who want to ride the replica track.

“The American Bicycle Association (ABA) is making every effort to ensure that the BMX riders representing the United States have the most accurate replica of the Olympic track on which they can train,” said ABA president Clayton John.

The track is the newest addition to “Rad Canyon BMX,” a high tech BMX facility which will host the Utah State Championships this summer. The track will also be used for the Pro Spectacular at the end of June as part of the ABA Great Salt Lake National event.

DAVID "WRAYZOR" WRAY TO BIKE ACROSS THE U.S.

Hello there BMX World.... and im not talking only to the magazine, im talking to the entire spoke & mag-a-scene.  im talking to anyone who has ever throw their leg up and over a 20" and raced and still is.  some of you may think you know me, some know a little about me, but most of the people in the BMX world hardly know me at all, and some have never even heard my name.  but there is no-one in my life at the moment that knows all the dynamics of who i am.  that is just fine and the way it is.  although i have appreciated every true friend ive ever made in bmx, i have rarely gone out of my way to convince people to think that i m cool and that they should be my friend to be cool.  you see, whenever i have gone to a race, a practice night, or even riding down the street, im focused on one thing and that is riding my bike and trying to ride it the best way i can.  unfortunately, the majority of the people in this great sport of ours rarely invites people outside of thier immediate circles to join them in after race cookouts or pool parties or whatever.  so i have usually been left driving off on my own wondering why people in BMX dont hang out with each other away from the track.  if people would take the time to do that they would learn so much more about who each other are.  for whatever reason (embarassment, fear, insecurity, misunderstanding, unwillingness, track politics and egos, and unsubstantiated judgment are a few) there is so much division among people in bmx ..... for the rest of the story click here.     (file under Oregon BMX)

LAND PRESERVATION BILLS ADVANCING IN SEVERAL U.S. STATES

info from I.M.B.A.
A new crop of
land preservation bills are advancing in several U.S. States. Thanks to the work of cycling advocates, many of them have been designed with mountain bikers' needs in mind. Bills in Oregon, Virginia and Georgia would allow mountain bicycling to continue in protected landscapes, while others include trail reroutes or boundary adjustments to permit continued access to important singletrack trails.    (file under Oregon Mountain Biking)

The Super D is a timed event and has 1 minute interval start times. Any bike will do for a Super D race, but this category of racing is where the all-mountain/trail bikes with 4, 5, and 6 inches of travel can really excel.

There will be no registration on the day of the race. No exceptions!
