MOUNTAIN BIKE
FREERIDE JAM ON SNOW
Pull out and dust off your mountain bikes
for the ‘Mountain Bike Freeride Jam on Snow!’
Yep, that’s right, come huck yourself off the jumps after hours in a 2
hour, open format jam session, in Conway’s Terrain Park.
Registration held in the Wy’east Daylodge from 3:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Sharp!
ALL participants must register, sign a release form, and pay just $15.
Bikes and riders have access to Stormin’ Norman lift for sessioning the
park from 4:30p.m.-6:30p.m.
Bikes must be ridden or hiked out to, and back from, the venue.
Protective gear is strongly recommended and snow studs are not allowed.
This is not a competition, but of course our awesome sponsors, including
NW School of Freeride, Windell’s, and Momentum Bike, Hike, and Board,
will be giving out plenty of swag and raffle prizes at the after party
immediately following the event.
When spring arrives, all roads lead to the beach as 2,000 cyclists
gear up for Reach the Beach, the annual fundraising ride for the
American Lung Association in Oregon. There are four great routes to
choose from and with distances ranging from 26 to 100 miles, there's
a route for everyone. But if you're not yet in shape for the route
you'd really like to ride, don't worry. Once again the Portland
Wheelmen Touring Club continues their tradition of partnering with
the American Lung Association in Oregon to lead free training rides
nearly every weekend from now until May 16th.
The ride has a unique feature for your non-riding friends and
coworkers: an opportunity to just dream of reaching the beach in
Pacific City. The ALAO recognizes that while we all care about clean
Oregon air and healthy Oregon lungs, not everyone rides a bike.
That's why this year they have added Dream of the Beach, an option
for people to participate, raise funds, earn prizes and get a free
t-shirt without ever hopping on two wheels.
The early registration rate for Reach the Beach ends at midnight on
April 12th, so sign up today and save.
Colorado Springs, Colo. (Feb. 25, 2009)—USA Cycling
announced today the creation of a new professional gravity mountain
bike series designed to recognize the top gravity racers in
America. The USA Cycling Pro Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (ProGRT)
will consist of five events, including three UCI-sanctioned races,
throughout the United States. Together, these races will provide
world-class athletes with a consistent stage to showcase their
downhill and 4-Cross skills.
Beginning in May of 2009, the ProGRT will visit four states and
offer series ranking points to top finishers, resulting in overall
individual titles for men and women. In addition, competitors will
also have the opportunity to accumulate international ranking points
as three of the five races are inscripted on the UCI calendar.
The series opens with the downhill contest at
the Fluidride Cup in Port Angeles, Wash., May 1-3 and then heads
south to the Chile Challenge in New Mexico where both the downhill
and 4-Cross contests will be a part of the ProGRT. The tour then
picks back up on Aug. 8 with both the downhill and 4-Cross at the
Blast the Mass in Snowmass, Colo. The following weekend, the ProGRT
moves east to the Yankee Clipper at Windham Mountain, the only race
on both the
Pro Cross Country Tour (ProXCT)
and ProGRT. Wrapping up the tour will be the Whiteface 5K Downhill
in Wilmington, N.Y. on Aug. 29.
“The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park is honored to be part of the Pro
Gravity Tour. Five of the premier venues in the U.S. have been
chosen for this historical series that will surely last for
generations,” said Downhill Mike, promoter of the Whiteface 5K
Downhill. “It is only fitting to be the last race on the tour
with our eight-minute downhill track as racers should be in their
best condition of the season by late August. The Lake
Placid/Whiteface region has hosted two Winter Olympics (1932 & 1980)
and has attracted numerous top athletes of all kinds ever since. The
time has now come to bring a new breed of world class athletes to
Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid. Welcome Pro Gravity Tour.”
The objectives of the inaugural USA Cycling Pro GRT are to provide a
sequence of international-caliber events for elite gravity racers,
to recognize the best gravity athletes competing on U.S. soil, to
spotlight America’s top races that have made a commitment to host
high-level events and ultimately to raise the level of competitive
gravity racing in the U.S.
“With the development of the ProGRT we were looking to showcase the
country’s strongest gravity venues,” said USA Cycling Mountain Bike
Events and Program Director Kelli Lusk. “We want to bring the elite

Also the days hanging out with buddies at Post Canyon & Black Rock
followed by the post-ride brew. Oh well it will be here soon

April. To bad they are on the same weekend for us dual sport

GEARED UP
From
businesses such as Nutcase Helmets to Bike Friday, Oregon’s bike madness
fuels a $150 million industry. Not to mention that there’s an organized
bike ride every 27 minutes.
Last
summer, when gas prices were hovering around $4.50 a gallon, the owners
of Clever Cycles in Southeast Portland had a business problem. Their new
bike shop was proving so popular that they couldn’t keep up with demand.
They had to shut down their business at the peak of the season to

MOUNTAIN BIKERS GO GEARLESS WITH THEIR SINGLE-SPEED
STEEDS
by Matthew Preusch, The Oregonian
BEND -- Hipsters in too-tight pants aren't the
only ones riding stripped-down bicycles these
days.
The trend toward back-to-the-basics bikes
extends off the pavement, as evidenced by the
increasing number of mountain bikers in Oregon
and elsewhere on single-speed bikes.
These are mountain bikes with only one gear
ratio and often none of the heavy-duty
suspension that's become a fixture on modern
trail-riding bikes.
For those who already consider mountain biking
just pedal-powered masochism, the attraction to
riding without the help of gears and comfort of
shocks might be hard to grasp.

PARKS SERVICE MOVES TO WIDEN MOUNTAIN BIKE ACCESS
The National Parks Service proposed a rule change on Thursday that
would make it easier for the country's national parks to open trails
to mountain bikes.
The rule would amend current regulations for designating bicycle use
on national parks land by allowing park superintendents to make
decisions at a local level about opening existing trails to bikes
instead of requiring a lengthy regulatory process.
The International Mountain Biking Association has been working with
the parks service to revise the current regulations since 1993.
While the association is pleased with Thursday’s development, IMBA
communications manager Mark Eller cautioned that “we don’t expect to
see hundreds of miles of mountain bike trails” opened right away.
Rather, the rule change would lay the groundwork for a less
cumbersome and time-consuming process to open trails to mountain
bikers.

US FOREST SERVICE ISSUES DIRECTIVE CATEGORIZING BICYCLES SEPARATELY FROM
MOTORIZED USES
Following a June internal memo differentiating mountain biking from
motorized use, the US Forest Service issued fresh administrative
directives including language clarifying bicycling as a non-motorized
activity. The directives affect up
to 130,000 miles of the agency's trails which are located all over the
US.
"Mountain biking is incredibly popular in national forests, and we
believe it's appropriate to clarify the distinction between mountain
biking and motorized use. Better policies will foster improved
partnerships and riding experiences," said IMBA Executive Director Mike
Van Abel according to the IMBA website.
The
actions come after several years of IMBA asking for further
documentation on its mountain biking policies. While most national
forests understand bicycling is a quiet, non-motorized activity, a few
have implemented rules rendering bicycles akin to motorized travel. The
new revisions to the Forest Service Handbook and Manual, which are the
primary basis for control and management of agency programs, are a step
toward standardizing mountain bike management at the field level.
"We're extremely pleased the Forest Service is taking these steps to
formally recognize bicycling as low-impact and human-powered. Embedding
this information in their employee handbooks will promote better
understanding and practices in all 175 national forests and grasslands,"
said Van Abel.
The
Forest service also updated its trail construction standards so that
bicycling joins hiking as a potentially suitable use on all trail
classes, from the most primitive of designated routes to more developed
paths. Decision-making regarding bicycle access on specific trails will
stay at a local level but the national-level change recognizes that the
environmental impacts of bicycling are similar to hiking and less than
other uses.
IMBA
and the Forest Service have been formal partners since 1994 and on their
third consecutive memorandum of understanding, which runs through 2010.
