HANDMADE SHOW
ATTRACTING BIG AND SMALL
info from the Bicycle
Retailer
PORTLAND, ORE —What do Shimano,
SRAM, Chris King, Zipp and Rolf Prima have in common? They
will all have
booths at this year's North American Handmade Bike Show.
Yes, the show is meant for those smaller frame builders to show of their
wares, but the presence these larger manufacturers are bringing to this
growing show is giving Handmade a brighterspotlight than ever before.
"We already have exhibitors from all over the country, and if past years are
a guide, we'll have a lot of attendees from across America, too," said Don
Walker, the show's director.

The cycling press has hopped on board as well, with Dirt Rag, Momentum
Magazine, Mountain Flyer, Road Bike Action and VeloNews taking show booths
to recruit new subscribers.
The 2008 show will be held in the Oregon Convention Center, Portland,
February 8-10.

EARTHED: THE LAW OF
FIVES DVD AVAILABLE NOW
In
the chaos of a new generation,
one rider named Sam Hill has made a statement by winning the World
Championships and the World Cup overall in the same season, but more than
just race results his influence on the sport will run deep for many years.
With every top rider pushing harder and faster than ever before, The Law of
Fives captures each aspect of this incredible race season, but when the
clock has stopped running the hungry young guns keep pushing the limits just
for the camera, and in a last effort to understand Sam Hill's incredible
skill he is put to the test on the 1:04 Dirt Magazine private test track.
"The Law of Fives states simply
that: ALL THINGS HAPPEN IN FIVES, OR ARE DIVISIBLE BY OR ARE MULTIPLES OF
FIVE, OR ARE SOMEHOW DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY APPROPRIATE TO 5. The Law of
Fives is never wrong".
**** First off let us just say
that Sam Hill slays everyone. The footage from The Champery World Cup
in Switzerland is crazy. The course is a mess of mud and he rides it like it
is dry. The Vigo Spain Fourcross Course finally makes fourcross
something other then BMX on twenty six inch wheels. The Decoy
BMX Jam seems out of place on this DVD. Oh well I absolutely love all
forms of cycling so I can deal with the Jam messing with the flow of the DVD
since the riding is top notch. Watching the sections with Gee
Atherton this guy is could be the best if he can knock off Hill. The
World Champs in Fort William Scotland show just how good Fabien Barel is
when he focuses (he was injured just getting back from a triple fracture in
his right foot) for a race. I wish there was more coverage of this
particular race.
Once again Alex Rankin delivers a
great race video. Go buy it you won't be disappointed.
You can get the DVD at the
Fat Tire Farm.

GODFATHER OF OREGON BMX DIES
info from the Bicycle
Retailer
The BMX world lost one of its
finest promoters this week when Scott Snook succumb to a long illness.
Many knew him as a track operator of Emerald Valley BMX in Eugene, OR; some
as a national announcer; or maybe as a promoter of Oregon's Governor Cup.
And many knew h im
as owner of national-race-vendor R&C, as well as the graffiti-inspired
Bomber number plates.
"Scott's long history with BMX racing in his state virtually made him the
'Godfather of Oregon BMX,'" said Gork Barrette, marketing director at
Redline Bicycles. "As an ABA National announcer throughout the mid 80s to
late 90s, many of his famous 'snookisms' are still used today.
"The BMX world will truly miss him. Northwest BMX racing would not be what
it is today without his decades of dedication to the sport," Barrette added.

BROKEN
Every time we take to the
open road, we entrust our lives to a safety net of legal protection and
basic human decency. That system has failed.

By
David Darlington
for
the story from Bicycling Magazine
I was reading the article above the today and thought I would pass it
on. As I was reading this article I got upset then pissed off. What it all
really comes down too is respecting all road users. If someone is negligent
you should be prosecuted as such.
I thank God everyday that what happened to me was minor. The people in
this article where not as lucky. My recovery is four to six months average
with nagging little things for years. These people are either dead, or have
a life time sentence of major pain and disability.

TRAIL ACTION ALERT
!!!
MORE INFO ON SYNCLINE
/ COYOTE WALL FROM I.M.B.A.
Help Improve Riding at Syncline
The
Forest Service needs your input as it updates its management for the popular
Syncline
riding area. Syncline is home to cherished trails like Little Moab and
Hidden Canyon, but some routes are unsustainable and cross private property,
prompting the need to create a formal network. IMBA urges all mountain
bikers to attend public meetings on Wednesday, December 12 and in January
(date to be determined).
Local clubs like the Columbia
Area Mountain Bike Association
(CAMBA) need your support to make sure mountain
biking interests are represented at the meetings. Syncline draws riders from
all over the Northwest and your advice is critical as the agency develops a
sustainable non-motorized trail system.
The
meetings will be held at the Pioneer Center in White Salmon, Washington at
6pm.
For more information, contact CAMBA representative
Ann McDonald
or the Forest Service’s
Stan Hinatsu.
If this
event is too far away for you to attend, we understand. We sent you this
email to not just invite you but also let you know about the important
work local mountain bike advocates are doing in your area.
Talking Points
-
1. Be sure to
identify your favorite trails and why you love them.
-
2. Remind the
Forest Service of your volunteer efforts at the Syncline and your
continued commitment to protecting the trails.
-
3. Help
identify trails or trail sections that should be closed and replaced
with sustainable routes.
-
4. Voice your
vision for the greater Syncline area and what niche the affected trail
system can fill.

WORST DAY OF THE YEAR
RIDE 2008
information from the ORbike
newsletter.
The Worst
Day of the Year Ride is an easy 18-mile odyssey around downtown Portland
that has quickly become a quirky annual tradition. You'll be kept warm
and comfy at every turn with tons of belly-nourishing treats including
hot cocoa, doughnuts, fruit, DragonFly chai tea, Nossa Familia coffee,
bagels, hot cider and much more. The finish line meal is a delicious
feast of local, sustainable and organic soups, fresh bread and the
camaraderie of all the riders who braved the day with you.
Want more of a challenge? The optional 40-mile loop traverses the west
hills out to Hillsboro REI for an extra-special rest stop that will warm
and fuel you for the ride back to Portland. The ride is capped at 2,000
riders and it will sell out, so sign up early.

THE SKI RESORTS ARE OPEN
I can't wait to get up on
the mountain. Today the base is 20-30 inches at Timberline, 14-20 inches at
Meadows, and 12-36 inches at Bachelor. The second test of my leg after
the accident will be coming soon. Time to prove the skeptics wrong.
Again. Time to shred.

CASCADE LOCKS OREGON
CONSIDERS MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS
The Port and City of Cascade Locks
have teamed to look at the feasibility of building mountain bike trails near
the town.
They contracted with trail
solutions coordinator Chris Bernhardt, of the
International Mountain Biking
Association, for the study.
“It’s very exciting to be involved
in a project like this; that the port and city are forward-thinking enough
to diversify their tourism base,” Bernhardt said.

side by the Columbia River and surrounded on the other sides by....... for
