Nepal earthquake

On Saturday, April 25 a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, just northwest of the capital of Kathmandu. It was the worst quake to strike the region in more than 80 years, killing thousands of people and injuring thousands more.

A second, 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit on May 12, causing more suffering for those who survived the initial quake.
Mercy Corps is distributing emergency supplies to survivors, including clothing, blankets, water purification liquid, cooking utensils, mosquito nets and shelter supplies. Read the latest updates below.
With more than 100 mostly local staff members, we have one of the largest humanitarian teams on the ground reaching hard-to-reach and overlooked villages. Seasoned responders from other global Mercy Corps offices have joined our Nepal team to help address the many logistical challenges and focus on longer-term recovery plans.
Mercy Corps has been working in Nepal since 2006, and has a deep knowledge of the environment, cultural context and local needs. We will likely leverage our extensive work with financial institutions to get people the cash they need to buy urgently needed supplies and rebuild their lives in the longer-term.
