What: The 15th annual Worst Day of the Year Ride
When: Sunday, February 14
Where: The Lucky Lab Brew Pub
915 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Portland
The Worst Day of the Year Ride celebrates its 15th birthday on February 14. To honor the anniversary, organizers are pulling out all of the stops. “We want to make this year special,” says Ride Director Porter Childs. “The Worst Day [of the Year] Ride is more than just a ride, it is a celebration of Portland’s quirky nature and fun spirit. We have some exciting surprises for our 15th birthday. There are all-new routes and all-new, fantastic, rest stops, plus some serious support behind the costume contest.”
There are still 2 distance options: a 15-mile urban course, and a 40-mile challenge course that crosses the west hills (each way). The rides still start and finish at The Lucky Lab, but this year boasts all-new watering holes: Ecliptic Brewing, Hi-Wheel Fizzy Wines, Velo Cult, and Cornelius Pass Roadhouse.
Touted as “Oregon’s only costumed ride”, the event backs its claim with over $5,000 in prizes for costumes in 4 categories: weather-themed, “punniest”, most elaborate and group. Prizes run three deep and include van tours, event passes, gear, food, beverages, and much more. There will also be a green-screen photo area, with both tropical and polar themed backgrounds, to preserve the memories with a 4×6 color, glossy photo.
Riders get breakfast, snacks on course, and homemade soups from Laughing Planet Café at the finish. Organizers close the streets and fill them with heated tents, in case of cold or rain.
“Imagine, it’s the middle of February and we have 3,000 people, many in costumes, riding bikes, keeping Portland weird”, muses Childs, “What a party.”
